Default Turn signals stay on, don't flash unless under load

My buddy just got a '05 600rr and the turn signals will not blink unless you slowly let the clutch out while in gear. The previous owner said it's to lower the voltage or something? If you don't do that, they just come on and stay solid. The fronts are aftermarket LED's and the rear are some trailer brake lights, not LED. I'm not very electrically knowledgeable...anyone have an idea what the problem is? We're going to tear into it this afternoon.

Update: The turn signals do blink, but very very very quickly. Anyone know what causes that?

LEDs have a lower resistance than standard bulbs. The bike's electronics are designed to flash a turn signal rapidly to alert you when one bulb is burned out. When the standard bulb is replaced in the circuit it thinks that one of the bulbs is burned out and that's why you're getting the rapid flashing rate.

There are aftermarket relays designed to be used with LED turn signals that will fix the problem. The other solution is to install an inline resistor somewhere close to the front LEDs so the total resistance is increased back to what it was when stock. I don't know the actual ohm value to get. My aftermarket Rizoma Zero 11 LEDs included the resistors.

Edit: Here's an example of the type of LED flasher relay I was talking about. Universal Turn Signal Flasher Relay I personally don't know anyone who has this.

Edit #2: Here's another flasher relay that claim to work with or without LEDs at the same flash rate: Electronic LED Flashers The motorcycle ones are near the bottom of the page. One advantage to using these over inline resistors is less heat buildup.
