Default Steering Dampers

Just wondering who out there was running with a steering damper. If you are, is there a noticeable difference and what brand are you using?

I bought the GPR stabilizer and I noticed less vibration on the front end section and I didn't fill as tire on longer rides.

What sort of a difference are you looking for? Of course there's going to be a difference based on what settings you use, what are you trying to avoid or fix?

I also run a GPR. A damper is simply to prevent the wheel from turning left or tight when you are leaning in a turn. The biggest difference you will notice is when you are sitting still and try to turn the wheel. I run mine firm because I will lean on almost any turn regardless of speed or turn radius. I would not recommend them for a newer rider unless they have gotten to the point where they do not use "steering" to turn the bike. They are designed for the track (although they help on the street) because on the track you should not be steering but leaning. They will also eliminate chatter on the front end at higher speeds on normal roadways. Hope this info helps. Also, keep in mind that if you buy one, make sure you shop for quality, not pretty. Once installed it becomes an integral part of your front end and the last thing you want is something cheap up front at speed.

If you're looking for a Band-Aid to fix a technique problem, then I would avoid buying a damper...basically a damper prevents head shake (not just from "leaning in a turn") which can become an all out tank slapper. Many people experience head shake and immediately think they need a damper, but head shake can be easily prevented by staying on the gas and being relaxed on the bars...I've stopped a few tank slappers by just relaxing my grip and not fighting it and head shake is like...whatever...it doesn't even phase me. If you do a lot of track riding or race I would definitely invest in a damper, if you stunt and pop wheelies all over the place, I would get a damper, if you have a liter bike, I would get a damper...but your average street rider (even an aggressive street rider) it's not necessary and could be money invested in a track school...or those silly fender eliminators everyone wants...

To stop being opinionated and answer your question, the difference is stiffer steering...

Because of the turns in the City you wouldn't have a need for the damper. On my bike I have to set the dial on 1 to ride in the city it would allow you to make better turns around corners.
