Ok, I called the bike shop, and they confirmed it's an 04, but first registered in 2005, hence why it has the 2005 reg plate on it.

Oh well, I didn't want to stir the bees nest by making a fuss, it's only done 4400 miles, and it's mint, so I'm still happy to pay the same price. Had a quick look on the local bike rag and it still seems good to me. Maybe I'm being naive.
