Default Maintenance

For fear of sounding too much of a newbie....even though I am, how often do yall recommend cleaning and greasing the chain, and what solvent or grease do you use for this? I purchased an 05 600rr about 4 weeks ago, and have roughly 700 miles on her...already done the first oil change...not as hard as i thought it would be. At any rate, I havent done anything with the chain yet and was just wondering... Thanks in advance for your input

I use a chain wax and check it every weekend to keep about an inch of play in it. About once a month I strip the chain and sprockets with a parts cleaner and check for wear or damage. Then I put a good coat of chain wax back on. The brand I use and have not had any problems with is Maxima Chain Wax. It's clean and doesn't sling off. Here's a pic so you can recognize the can.

Depends on the conditions you ride in, your manual will recomend every 500 miles, I clean and lube mine everytime i clean the bike normally once or twice a week.
But then i do live in the UK and we get some real bike rotting weather. I ride all year round and it doesn`t take long for the road grit they put down in winter to start eating away at your bike.

As for adjustment i`ll have a look at it everytime i ride and if its gettin even slighty loose i`ll correct it.

I recommend lubing/waxing once every 500 miles. I use PJ-1 Black Label chain lube, just make sure the chain is warm when you put it on... otherwise it'll slop around the first couple rides. As far as cleaning the chain, WD-40 does the trick. Just make sure you wipe off all excess and let it dry as much as possible. After cleaning the chain, apply a small about of lube/wax because the chain will be cold. Go take it out for a ride, heat that chain up, then throw on some more.

500 is fine... A buddie of mine is obsessive about doing his every 200 (Those weird Yamaha guys). Anyway, as far which to use it's personal preference. Lube is easier to work with in my oppinion. Both get the job done well, however wax tends to be alot cleaner than lube. Enjoy
