Stop!!!!! While I am of the opinion that more slack is better than no slack (common chain killing error) 2 inches is way too much. If you've never adjusted your chain before, don't worry -- it's easy. You're gonna need a torque wrench with a big socket (1000RR takes a 1 1/4")
Loosen the axle nut but don't remove it. You have an adjusting bolt on both sides of the swingarm held tight by a jam nut. Get two wrenches -- one to hold the adjuster bolt and the other to loosen the jam nut. O.K. both jam nuts should be loose now and the axle nut should also be loose. Now you will tighten the adjuster bolts 1 flat at a time (looking at the bolts from the back of the bike you'd turn 'em to the right to tight). Every time you tighten the bolt 1 flat check the chain tension. When your tension gets between 1 1/2 and 1 1/4 retighten the jam nut making sure the adjuster bolt doesn't move. When you tighten up the axle nut to spec it'll draw out another 1/4 inch of slack and leave you at 1 1/4 to 1 inch.
Important: all adjustments should be done while bike is on the sidestand. When tightening the adjuster bolts make absolutely sure you adjust each one the same amount and only go 1 flat at a time. You'll have to check the owners manual for the torque on the axle nut - I don't know what it is on the 600RR.
