Default Oil filter?

I just purchased a 2000 F4 which needs some work to be ready for spring riding. (Previous owner rode off with disc lock on which destroyed rt. disc.) In looking through Clymer manual it says one must use taller of the 2 oil filters on the F4. Is this really necessary? What difference might it make?

Thanks.

Not really sure what your asking here. what 2 oil filters? here's a cross reference chart for oil filters, http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/FilterXRef.html. I usually use the 3.25 purolator PL14610 on mine.

NAPA 1358 or Wix 51358. Works just fine.

Hey, I actually know what you are talking about. I bought my F4 last June, and it had the F4i (short filter) on it, I replaced it with a FRAM filter that was the spec of the tall or proper one. I'm actually choked and reading this thread because Carter Honda just sold me the F4i filter today assuring me it was the right one (a friend picked it up for me) and it is not.

I'm a newbie apprentice moto-tech so I really don't know the answer to your question. I do know that the Honda service manual says nothing about this part (assuming your Honda dealer will know i guess) My theory is that the shorter filter changes the amount of oil you'll need to replace (obviously) and that perhaps the larger filter can deal with a higher frequency of oil, and the injected F4 has a slower cycle.

My guess would be that this isn't a huge deal, but my gut says it could be; and why risk it.

I'm choked I have to wait till Monday to sort this out, I'll ask my Buddy who works in the shop there and report back.
