Fuel pump trouble

Hi everyone. My first post here. I'll start off with a tech question. About a year ago my bike left me stranded and so I got the fuel pump replaced, the carbs cleaned, and new spark plugs. The fuel pump had failed, but the other stuff needed done anyways. Anyways, a couple weeks ago I get stranded again. The culprit is once again the fuel pump. The first shop
I took it to went out of business so no chance of a warranty replacement so I had to suck it up and buy another one. My ultimate question is what is the deal with my fuel pumps failing. It seems unusual to me that the same problem would pop up twice so close together. Is it normal for f4 to have to replace the fuel pump every 5000 miles or so? I hope not.
Any wisdom from those more experience would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I'm definitely not one of the more experienced here, but I'd test all of the electrical involved. I'm pretty sure every 5000 isn't normal. Sometimes (probably more often than anybody would care to admit), replacement parts are defective. In my experience fuel pumps don't give you any warning before they fail, and whenever I've toasted one it was usually because I've run out of fuel or used some very bad fuel. Sometimes they were electrical problems though.

Well, that would make sense. A month or so ago I got the ac dc rectifier replaced, because it wasn't charging my battery. Then once my battery was running great the fuel pump failed. I made the mistake once of jump starting with a running car before i knew i shouldn't do that. Maybe that is it.
Are you sure the fuel pump is dead? Have you hotwired it to make sure it is the pump and not the relay? Yes jump starting it off a running car frys the crap out of the electrical system. If the fuel pump and RR is all that got fried count yourself lucky.

Fuel pump has been replaced. You could hotwire the old one and it wouldn't start. Then tap a wrench up to it a few times and something would break loose and it would start up. But it wasn't consistent.
I'm a seriously newb mechanic. The extent of my tinkering so far has consisted of replacing the air filter with a knN, changing the oil a few times, and adjusting my chain tension. For some reason the electronics just intimidates me though. My dad had a porsche 914 project car that has never been finished because he fried the electrical system while trying to replace the starter. I guess I just don't trust myself.
Over the winter I want to fix it up a lot, so I will probably get a thread going later bugging you all for advice.
So I guess the consensus is that I probably caused premature failure due to being dumb and jumpstarting it?

More than likely.. .if you can tap it and it will pulse on.. it might be the contacts inside the end.. there is a post on the F3 forum about repairing them... My pump was giving me fits.. shutting off and leaving me stranded every 300-500 miles or so.. replaced it.. fixed.. knock wood.
Idodirt is really knowledgeable about fixing 600 fuel pumps. He and I had a good discussion on them. I think the problem with the F3 pumps is the long pause between pulses. They use single neg. coil wire where the 900RR uses both wires and a shorter pulse. He'd be the one to look up and ask.
