fan stopped working

fan stopped working
hey all...wondering if any1 can lend some help for my 99 f4 cooling dilemma
the weather has been on the cool side (around 40-50 degrees F) so it hasn't been a big issue
one day I noticed my temp guage was climbing above the halfway mark. when I rode on the highway, the needle sits back at the normal position (right under the halfway mark)
riding in locals and the stop and go, the needle climbs back up again. I got back home to check the coolant and it was low. Filled it with the 50/50 mix and thought that was it. Problem remained and later realized the fan wasn't working. Checked the fuse and it was still good.
so question is, any1 have an idea as to what caused the fan to stop working and suggestions to fix it?
appreciate all the help, thanks!

RE: fan stopped working
There should 2 wires, at the connector they are black/blue and green, at the motor they are black/blue and black. Make sure the fan fuse is good and with the key on ground the black wire. Fan should start. If it does either the fan switch (which is threaded into the left side of the radiator) is bad orisn't reaching a high enough temperature to start the fan. If it still doesn't start it's either the motor or a wiring problem. Check for good +12v on the black/blue wire. Put simply with the key onthere should always be +12v on the black/blue wire, the switch, when at a high enough temp., makes a connection to ground. Fan should start between 208-216 F and shutoff between 207-199 and lower.
Also, if the coolant is very low, the fan switchand the temp gaugewon't work right because of the air in the system.

RE: fan stopped working
I rode the bike today in over 60 degree weather and the fan still would not activate. I depended on the highway air circulating to cool the bike down.
I grounded the connector wire to bike...and the fan spins instantly.
I assume that everything else is proper and that the switch is bad? I wouldnt have to worry about relays and other wiring would i?
Thanks for the help.

RE: fan stopped working
Well now we've narrowed it down to the fan switch. There are no other relays, the only condition in that circuit is the fan switch. So, the fan switch is not coming on because a) it's failing or b) it's not hot enough. I know my fan rarely comes on and if it does it's on a pretty hot day and I'm at a stop in city riding. I would just run it standing still and see what happens when it gets up to 200-215 F (at the switch). If it doesn't turn the fan on then I would replace it.

RE: fan stopped working
thanks for the insight
im pretty positive that my fan is not coming on when its suppose to because when the bike gets too hot when i am idling at the red light, my tacometer would bounce a lil and then it might stall.
I've been told that its the gasoline getting too warm causing that so im pretty sure its at a temperature where the fan is suppose to kick in.
Thanks a lot, im already in a search for a switch and a lil shocked..45 bucks for that little dinky thing?..get outta here!
