The only wire common to both the signals and the headlight is the ground. Was it the green wire? If so that should most certainly not have melted down. Did it melt and catch fire or did something else melt it and set it on fire? Do you maybe have higher wattage signal bulbs or headlight bulbs? Any blown fuses? Headlight is fuse A and signals are fuseC. There should be 9 pin connector with 7 wires connected to it. Check for shorts/damaged wires/poor connections on the bulb side of the green wire.

About replacing, if there is any good wire coming out of the 9 pin connector I would just butt splice in the new wire there and rewire as far as you feel necessary. The farther you go the better. Just because there might be insulation left on the wire doesn't mean it's still good, it could be burnt/corroded on the inside.

Is the headlight you have in a higher wattage bulb? Stock is 55/60W. I've seen connectors melt before because of the headlight wattage being to much. (1 personally on my silverado, 2 100W Xenons melted both low beam connectors!) Rewire the parts that are visibly bad and then with all the bulbs out check for continuity between - & + and ground and +. There should be no continuity there.
