Clutch problem or just a fluke?
hi, i got a 1999 cbr 600 f4. here is the story: i was doing about 100-110 on the highway in 3ed gear( i kno, i kno, i ned to save it for the track, pls dont burn on me foe that), when all of a sudden i had to slow down do to traffic. And when i went from 3ed to 1st the bike would not go into 1st. As i kept pressing down to go into 1st it made a clicking noise and only stayed in N. It was resisting me to push it into 1st and kept "popping" out of 1st and into N. after i killed the bike a started it back up, it finally went into 1st as normal and i rode away. Is this a clutch problem, or did i just push down to hard, to quick?
thanks,
Dan

I am not sure if I understand your story completely but if your going 110 and you try and jam the bike into first it would make sense if it would not let you pop it in gear. Think about what would happen to your RPM's if you went from 3rd to 1st at that speed; you wold blow something for sure.
Think about how a trans works.. you have everything spinning at the speed of the engine..when you downshift you're suddenly using wheel rpm to spin up the engine and trans. You can't drop it into 1st while youre going too fast because the wheels will rip the engine/trans up to redline and beyond, that's how people bend valves..
If you mean you were going for a normal downshift into 1st at low speeds, try rev matching it.. or blipping the throttle, then pulling the clutch in, then downshifting.

More like too soon! RPMs/speed should be low, & by low I mean really low b/f shifting into first. Its "possible" to get the bike down into first at higher speeds but as platnumbob said, you'd blow something for sure. In your case, be thankful you're bike wouldn't go into first...it may have saved you some engine work.
srry 4 the coffusion. i was braking hard and came 2 a comlete stop b4 going into 1st. but it would not go in. let me ask u this, wen u guys shift, up or down, do u push up or down hard? or just tap? thanks, dan
Honda's always have had finnacky tranny's. The faster you shift, the better Honda tranny's shift. You don't need to shift hard, just fast and accurate. If the problem continues, could be a bent shift fork, but from what you described, just a fluke.
thanks for the replies. But, yeah, it only happened that one time, it just got me a little nervous. Hate this Pa weather were having right now, can't wait until Wed, so its actually sunny for once.
thanks,
Dan

Sometimes if you're stopped and it won't go into 1st from neutral, pull in the clutch and let it out and pull it in again and then it will go into first. It's weird, but it works every time on every bike when that happens...
