I have a 1999 CBR F4 and I here some pretty awful noise coming from the engine when at low RPMs (~1250 RPMs). The noise has the quality of being a chain that is inside the engine and the noise goes away as the engine revs up past 3000 RPMs. I am not too savvy in the engine so if anyone has had this happen or thinks they know what it might be let me know.

 

Is your chain very old ?Mine was doing this ,one of the links was binding up everytime it came around the front sprocket.After a good cleaning and lube job the problem disapeared.

 

This is happening at a stand still so the drive chain is not in motion by this point. Is there some kind of timing chain or tensioner inside the engine that wears out?

 

Yes there is a timing chain and guides. Chances are that the cam chain tensioner is worn out.
