The Woes of a Bouncing Tach Needle
Hello everyone!
This has been a problem for a while, and I can't seem to narrow it down.
Recently I installed a set of '96 gauges on my '98 F3.
Needed a new set and I got them for a KILLER price.
Anyways, I noticed I have a bouncing tach needle when I'm holding the throttle at a constant rate - usually highway speed above 7k.
If I pin the gas, the needle stops bouncing and balances out with just slight jitters.
It really only bounces when held steady above 7k.
I've read it could mean a bad battery, a poor ground, or a failing charging system.
- I've replaced the batt. No effect. I also charge mine on the regular.
- I replaced the Reg/Rec with no effect.
- I've tried to narrow gremlins in the electrical system. I found one of the main plugs for the charging system, perhaps from the stator to the reg/rec was fried/melted. I replaced the plug and haven't had a problem since. I also noticed the bad connection after I replaced the reg/rec as I've had a pretty good hunch it was failing and not moderating proper voltage.
Any thoughts?
