Unhappy valve problems ???? i hope

well i took my bike to a shop to have the carbs taken off to be cleaned maybe rebuilt cause i dont have the time , i got a call from them staing my bike wont start and they did a compression test and i dont have compression cyclinder 1. 110 2. 25 3. 55 4. 10 i said how is that when i rode the bike there , they said my pistons are pitted , rings bad .. but my bike never smoked . the bike was very hard to start put once started then it ran fine unless at a light and i could see the RPM gauge move up a little then back down , could kinda feel that when i was at a constain speed . but my bike has 30,000 miles on it , valves i dont think have ever been done . this other mechanic said he thinks its my valves , that if it was my valves the start wouldnt start it but i could pop the clutch and it should start .. im tired of mechanics at shops .. i trust you guys more so does and one have any ideas

There is a very helpful stickie on here that will guide you through the process of checking valve clearance and shim replacement.

Hi mate,
I would get down their and ask them to show you the compression test, if you do see a notible difference in the readings then ask them to repeat the test with a squirt of oil into the cylinders.
If the readings do increase then you know it may well be the rings.
They should of done this already if they are saying its the piston rings.

Ant.

im sick of shops myself, the only way i let anyone touch my bike is if im there watching them, which is next to impossible due to the fact they like their privacy. lol. its hard to find an honest mechanic with high ethics and most of em want 70 to 80 bux an hour, which is a friggen rip off to begin with. in all honesty i can do anything they can, the bich is, having all the right tools and a big ole barn to work in, and the freakin time! my next life im going to enroll in Motorcycle Mechanics Institute. Good luck with your bike, and i hope to goodness those boys didnt f up your bike on purpose.

Hard to start, but runs fine warm is a symptom of valves out of spec. Bad rings can be tested as f3cbrant said. 30,000 miles without lashing the valves, Honda recommends every 11,000. I'd say check your valves. A compression gauge is cheap and simple to use, I'd get one and check it myself.
