RE: steering damper question
If it's going to be a race bike then, yes. Get it. You can make it work by cutting your upper racing fairings to allow for the piston to be mounted to the frame. I think you're talking aboutthe Daytona-style damper?
If it's the one on eBay I'm thinking about, it is generic and I'm just not sure on getting re-build kits for it in the future. That being said, however, any damper offers a ton of help, as a racer I'm sure you're already aware of that. Just do some fabbing on your race fairings and you'll be set.
And as for the R1 being the only bike that needs a damper... you obviously don't ride hard. The F4 needs it, the F4i, the 900RR's, the 929's, 954's and the new 1000RR's come standard with damper. If you're gettin' it on your bike, you'll see the need. With THAT being said, I've pushed my F3 pretty facking hard and never felt the need for a damper, lol. But I've not tracked it, either.

RE: steering damper question
Oh I ride hard,trust me.
I didn't think the 929 needed one,the 954 was a wee-bit more twitchy than the 929.RC51 didn't need one.Hadn't ridden the F4/F4i at all.My 600rr didn't need one,rode it hard too .
The Daytona style mounts in front of the fairing bracket, and goes underneath the clip on that's on rider's left.I didn't have to modify anything, and it works like a charm (knock wood).
