Slipping out of gear
So I recently got my f3 on the road and noticed that if I have the bike full throttle it feels like it pops out of gear for a second or two and then pops back in. It's only at high rpm's and its done it a few times already. Any ideas or places to start?
mine started that way on my f4i in 2nd gear, then went to 3rd also, 3rd started popping back into 2nd under full throttle, then eventually would pop back into 2nd with no throttle. ended up being rounded dogs on the gears requiring a transmission swap. good luck
If it's popping out of gear, then it is most likely a problem with the dogs. It's probably not a bad time to start watching ebay for engines. If you have to pay someone to split your engine cases to replace the dogs, or even a single dog it's more than likely going to be more expensive that what a good used engine is going to be on ebay.
i got a full set of gears for 100$ from a salvage shop on ebay. did the job myself in a weekend. i was going to go the new engine route, but im pretty sure this motor has work done to it so i opted to keep it.
Oh, there's no doubt that you can save a significant amount of money doing it yourself for sure. But it's a big job requiring a decent set of tools and skills. Not a job to be taken lightly.
my buddy was on his 98 yzf 600 he knew he had a problem with the tranny slipping. he is one of those guys who after 1 month of riding think they good. anyways hes at a light, throws it in second, taches her up to 4-5k,....... bet you can see where this is heading. tranny slips, 4-5k in 2nd= roughly 7-8k in first. bike goes up he goes off.
long story short, shop diagnosed dogs as the problem, since he didnt get it checked earlier he lost 1st and 2nd, bent the shifter shaft and locked the tranny.
shop tore apart told him it took 15hrs to do, said it will be 300$ to get the engine and bike back torn apart, 3200$ to repair all parts of tranny including labor, or 1500$ to put back together how it was. he gave them the bike and said ****em.
oh and he broke his right arm, had a slight concusion, and alot of bruising. listen to idodirt, start searchin for used/rebuilt engine or learn to repair it fast.
