RE: Noise when in neutral
good day, I am currently looking for my first cbr600f3. I already seen a good example though somethings bothering me with the engine. The bike started right up but after a few seconds I hear a noise in the right side off the bike. I can best describe the noise as irregular like a chain brushing up a metal, it comes and goes. I was thinking it was the timing chain though I have been through many bikes in need of camchain and it doesnt sound like a high pitched rattling. I felt that it was like coming of the right side which is where the bikes cam chain is located. How would I determine if its the bike clutch that rattling and notthe camchain. Thanks in advance for the reply

RE: Noise when in neutral
idk i got a bike recently and i started hearing the same exact noise that you describe.
then it started leaking oil the next day, and sure enough it was the cam chain.
i don't no how to help you but just saying to be careful with it.
i brought it to a honda dealer and they said they need to atleast fix the top end and that its gonna cost a minimum of 1,200$.
what would you say is an average price to fix, or does that seem about right?

^^^Sounds like they're assuming your timing is off... ? If you're mechanically inclined it's not a difficult job but very tedious - you'll need a manual. I sure as **** wouldn't pay someone to do it...
Rainman, F3's are notorious for OEM cam chain tensioner failure. It is best described as, "a single marble bouncing around the top-end." If it was left it could certainly jump timing and cause all sorts of problems internally and ultimately cause leaks.
However I'm hesitant to tell someone what a sound is without hearing it, I would rather the person tell me what they hear and where it's coming from - I've heard a CCT failure described in a ton of different ways and you can still tell when people are talking about it even though they may have completely different descriptions.

if my bike is leaking oil....bad, does that mean that it might be more then just the cct since its obviously been a problem for a while?
also how much should it cost to fix myself? because i have seen them online for about $50, and the shop is asking $1,200.
seems like that is to far of a price change. maybe im missing something, im not sure.
thanks for any help.
