Default Need some help! A small emergency

98 cbr with f4i gauges wired in. Was riding and then lost my tach and speedo then flickering and bike stuttered then died.

Looks like my kickstand wires shorted. one wire was completely bare the other some melting from the fried wire. Bike with start in neutral with kick stand up or down. When I put it in first it stops running. Speedo lights dim when i pull the clutch in. Any ideas? Had to walk home a little ways not sure what the issue is. Maybe if I wire out the kickstand switch? How do I do that?

correct me if im wrong but the kickstand switch need to be closed (up position) in order to run in gear. So since the wire burned theyre no longer touching or making a complete circuit so the bike is reading it as open...There are three wires I see now. Black which burned (guessing it black), green and yellow/blk. How would I wire these to fool the bike into thinking the kick stand is up?

****further research say to connect the two green ones (not black) and tape up the yellow/blk.

Ok so connect the two and turned my key switch to on. had a little trouble because it was a little stuck- frozen. Dash lights flickered like a strobe for about 5 seconds then nothing. Everything shut off...where should I begin? Checked the 4 fuses in front fuse box by the triple tree and all are good. Thinking my ignition may have broken from being frozen or something and me turning the key? How would I bypass the ignition to check?

It's early, and I don't have the time before work to give you the depth to answer your
question. I'll sit down later today and try to talk you through some of this.
Just wanted to re-assure you someone is listening and subscribe to this thread
for a later response....

okie dokie thanks. Forgot to check the starter relay fuse. it was blown I got lights! So basically just need to know how to bypass kickstand stuffs. I traced the green/wht and green wires back to the other side of the battery box where the casing was burnt any more. Tried wiring them together but it just blows the 30 amp fuse at my starter relay when I turn the key on.

the g/w goes from the stand switch to the ignition box and also to the clutch switch. Interesting since the clutch when pulled in makes the lights dim. I did take the clutch switch wires off when it first happened thinking that was the issues. Do these have to go on a certain post on the switch or does it not matter?

Any ideas?

It sounds like you have a dead-short in the circuit, most probably in the stand-switch run.

Just shorting across the kick-stand switch should work. It dis-connects the starter
when the stand is down. It shouldn't blow a fuse if you do that.

Most likely the wire between the starter relay and that switch is grounding out on the
frame, somewhere along it's length. From the kick-stand switch, trace each wire along
it's path. Look closely for a frayed/kinked/bare section. Any sign of melted/burnt insulation.

That's where the real issue is most likely lurking. Try that first, see where it leads you.

If that doesn't do the trick, it gets a little more technical. Do you have a multi-meter?
It's an inexpensive, basic tool for this kind of work. If you plan on doing much of your
own work, you'll want to add one to the toolbox. Try my first suggestion, get back on
the results and then, we'll go through how to procede from there.

Hope this helps, Ern

ive cut the wires from the switch and have traced them within about 10 inches of the ignition unit box. I do have a multimeter. Any way to figure out which wire is not working right? Green is just a ground so it wouldnt be that right? Since if its bare wire is touching the frame it wouldnt matter? So it has to be along the green/wht wires path?

the G/w goes straight to the ignition box and also goes off to the clutch switch. After the clutch switch it turn into G/R (i think hard to read the pdf file) and that goes to the starter relay and a diode that connect to the neutral indicator. Since my bike will start only in neutral im guessing my neutral indicator and that diode are ok.

So how do I check if its the wire between the sidestand and clutch switch or after clutch to the starter relay?

got it figured out! cut the green/wht and green wires about 3-4 in from the ignition box and spliced them. Also ran the green (ground) that goes through the rest of the wiring harness to the two spliced wires.

Thanks for your help!

glad to see you got in fixed! in the future.... testing circuit resistance and volt dropping a circuit in question will really help with diagnotics, let me know if you have questions on either
