Default Nail In Rear Tire

Alright so I got a pretty good back tire with alot of miles left on it and today i noticed it had a long nail sticking out of it, it wasnt straight in the tire puncturing the inner part of the tire but it was slanted at an angle and no deeper in the "top" tread then the lowest part of the tire, like the little valley lines going across the tire...but anyway you guys think itll be alright or get a new tire? Tires like new and I pulled the nail out and it seems to be fine, but im a little scared of a blow out.

For me, I wouldn't give it a second thought. If you're not doing competitive drag racing every weekend, just forget about it.

I had the same problem a few weeks back, and I went to a motorcycle shop for advice. He told me it was just in the top layer (he said motorcycle tires have four layers). He pulled the nail out, and like IDoDirt said, he told me not to give it a second thought.

Long as it's not through to the core and hasn't damaged the belts, you should be fine.

I would inspect it for a few tanks of gas, looking for anything beyond the cosmetic damage you describe (tears or separation), than not really worry about it.

Motorcycle tires are tougher than you really think man .... lol

I've even internally patched a few that had punctured all the way through and rode on em till they were dead (don't try to use plugs for an extended time though and only unless it is absolutely an emergency ... that's asking for trouble) ... just know that any damage to tires weakens them from their full potential, so don't be flying along with even a slightly damaged tire at 160+ mph or trying to do a trackday with one ... Tires need to be at the top of their game to do stuff like that ... but for everyday riding and commuting, the tires of today are far more than tough enough ...

But I totally second MadHattr059's advice on inspecting it for the next few tankfuls ...

just my two cents there ..
