Default Manual Fan Switch

I know this has been covered and I've a few posts about it but I'm not sure if I'm using the correct wire. Whenever I tap into the Thermo-switch wire and ground it to see if will turn my fan on, it just blows the fuse. Am I doing something wrong? Any help.

The wire to the fan is hot (+). The thermostat grounds to frame to complete the
circuit.

You need to ground it after the fan and before the thermostat or you are just dead
shorting the harness.

If that's what you are doing then the fan is bad/siezed and creating too great a load for the circuit.
Will the fan blades turn by hand? Is there anything obstructing it from turning?

Make sure your fan blade is not bent, or something stuck...prevent fan from spinning freely....if you ground the wire, the fan try's to spin but stuck somehow, thus blow out the fuse...

The fan turn ok but it turns on too late and with the heat lately it overheats quickly. I was going to have the fans running more frequently then they are set for. Does anyone have a picture of where they tapped into?

I added a manual fan switch on an '08 1000RR. The ground signal to the fan relay is what is switched on mine. By doing it this way the fans (mine has two) still come on automatically when the temp reaches a certain point and the fans turn off if I turn the ignition key off even if I had the switch turned on and forgot to turn it off, thus no battery drain.

The key to mine is the ground wire is switched, not the hot.

Here's a link to the thread I posted on it. Maybe you can get some ideas for yours from it.

Thanks for that Roadijeff but I have a 96 cbr f3. I'm honestly not sure how to get that to work with my bike. If anyone has ideas, I would like to use it.

Yes, that's why I suggested to take a look at your wiring diagram and see if you can get any ideas from my write-up on installing a switch for yours.

They are both Hondas. Perhaps they both use a switched ground signal to turn on the fan relay. Find the ground connection on your fan relay, jumper a temporary ground wire from the frame to it, turn the key on and see if the fan comes on. If it does then you'll know exactly how you can wire your manual switch to make it all work.

I figured it out. I was testing the wrong wire. It was jumbled and I grabbed the wrong one. Thanks for the help everyone.
