Default How do i clean the gas tank?

The PO put on an aftermarket gas cap that you just screw on/off with no key lock.... so some little bastard kid decided to put rocks, dirt, and sticks into the gas tank. Ive taken the gas cap off, and unbolted the petcock and shook violently out of both open holes, but i couldnt get anything out but gas. i mean the largest object in there is no bigger than the head of a pencil eraser, but i cant get anything to come out. Any advice?

Hmm... tough one. If it weren't a gas tank, I'd try a garden hose hoping a large flow would force the junk out of an opening. But there's a rust danger doing that.

Maybe air from a compressor?

yeah when i searched google i've read of people using anything from garden hoses to pressure washers to blow out the tank, then putting a couple ounces of motor oil in it, then about a gallon of gas, and swish it all around for a while to coat the metal so it wont rust, then dump it out and fill up with gas. i might try this.

A graden hose is fine, so long as you don't let water sit in there. Wash the crap out of it, then just shoot a hair dryer around in there afterwards. Then just fill it up, and toss in some fuel system water remover treatment to be safe.
