Default carb/jet questions

So I have been having a problem recently with my bike running funny, dies when exiting highway coming from high rpm to idle, also get a lot a popping/backfiring going on all the time, opened a thread and was recommended to check the air/fuel and or jets, well I finally got the carbs off (pita) and opened them up, first of all no e of the boots were tight so that might be an issue?, secondly the jets are numbered ( from left to right) 140 140 142 142 and they have letters rd stamped on them, I'm still new to this but arnt they in the wrong order? Also the adjustment screws (d shaped) seem to vary a lot, from left to right the degree they sit is 180 270 90 180 if that makes sense, is that an issue? Any help is appreciated, I have them apart now so the sooner the better, thanks in advance.

Somebody put the jets in the wrong order. Put the 140s on 1 and 4, and the 142s on 2 and 3. The loose clamps on the boots will definitely cause problems. Depending on year and location, your pilot adjustment screws should be anywhere from 1 1/2 turns to 2 turns out from fully closed. They should all be within an 1/8th of a turn of each other. It can vary a little if you carbs aren't totally synched.

I put the jets back in the right order and now it doesn't want to run, seems like it's running one 3 cylinders which is to be expected I guess since I changed the jetting, so should I reset it all to stock settings and start from square one? Are those jets appropriate for my bike with a k&n and Ful race exhaust?

Also, if I'm going to start over that means setting the mixture screws back to factory, I have a 96, not sure what the factory setting is but regardless I'm getting more flow through the engine with an aftermarket filter and exhaust so should I set them rich by a quarter turn over factory? I know lean can be real bad so I would rather be rich, would a clockwise turn make it more rich or lean? Thanks again for the help

A stock 95 f2 has 135s and 138s for mains 40s for pilot jets. You have 140s and 142s, but could need bigger mains due to the race pipe and K&N. Stock pilot setting is 1 1/2 turns out, so you could go 2 turns out to start. Turning the screw out richens the mixture. You can actually run the bike on only the pilot jets up to 5000 rpms if needed.
