Default Bike all of a sudden lost electrical power

Bike has ran great since i've owned it (6 months)

but tonight out of nowhere I pulled over to take a break and 5 minutes later I went to turn the bike back on and it was completely dead

i was able to push start the bike but when i finally got it started it would barely idle and I couldnt rev it up at all, it would just sputter bad

I couldnt find my jumper cables so obviously i'll try that tomorow, but something tells me its not a dead battery

Any tips on diagnosing this problem???

Thanks

Mine did that, and the rectifier was toast, replaced it, I was good to go

For testing the charging system. Also, check under your gauges where the connections are. I was riding down the freeway once and the bike sputtered and died and would not start. I checked under there and there was a loose connection, the red plug, tightened it up and fired right up.

hopefully it is the cheap and easy fix (rectifiers are expensive): check the main fuse.

Ya - check the charge of the battery.

If it charges and the bike runs well, it may not have been charging properly... in which case reg/rec is likely.

If the battery won't charge, then the battery is likely dud - get it tested.

When a battery dies it often stresses the charging system, or vice versa - a bad charging system can wreck a battery. It is worth checking both... it can save you money!

Now - the other fail point is a bad ground, or bad connections in general.

Ok just got back from the parking lot where the bike is and heres what happend.

First thing I did was connect jumper cables to the bikes battery from my car. Bike fired right up and acted perfectly normal, I let it run for a while with the cables connected just to let it charge. When I took the cables off the bike instantly started sputtering and barely idling and If I connected the cables again it ran perfectly normal again.

I tested the battery with my multimeter and it was fine 12.xx volts when the ignition was off but when i tested the battery with the ignition in the on position it read like .4 something???? Might be normal i dont know

Main 30A fuse was good, but I think its the regulator/rectifier, heres a pic of the plug.

Hmmm, you should get 13-14 volts at idle using a multimeter across the battery, your .4 sounds like the bike is not charging.

Most likley the VR.

I had a VR go south on me om my 600 F1 Hurricane.

The bike ran like **** and I had to keep the rev's up just to get the bike home, and once home after shutting off the bike it was dead as door nail...

VR's are $60 bucks on ebay

Well it would be pointless to test the battery with the bike running because the bike only runs when the jumper cables are connected.

As soon as I take the jumper cables off the bike just barely idles and it wont start back up unless the jumper cables are on
