Default 12.6v, intermittent lights, charger acting crazy, please help

I have a 96, all stock except turn signals and stop light as far as I know. I never had a problem this bike until I went to start it today. When I turn the key, the lights came on, but as soon as I press the starter button everything just went dark. I've checked the fuses near the handlebars and I've made sure the battery is fully charged. I've also made sure the connections on the battery are clean and tight. When I hook my voltmeter to the battery, it has 12.6 until I turn the ignition on, at which point it drops between two volts and 0. When I put my battery charger on to jump it, it acts crazy and goes between half and full charge very rapidly. I've tried jiggling wires near the ignition and fuse, to no avail. Sometimes when I leave the key on, the lights will come on very faintly and get a little bit stronger, but then they will just click and go out. I'm really desperate and frustrated. Any help would be super appreciated.

Really sounds as if the battery is knackered, it may indicate the correct voltage but appears not to be holding the charge hence the issues that you are having.

You are exactly right. I wish I would have asked you before I spend an hour tearing the entire bike apart LOL. I threw a brand new battery I had laying around and it starts and runs perfect. I'm guessing the old battery had an internal short or something. Thanks for the help.
