when i did mine i thought it was an acceptable rate and would actually be more noticeable but they gave me a hard time when i took it to get inspected

Jeez....Not so good. I guess the laws in the UK and US are different as mine have never had any issues. Hopefully you got it sorted though (or persuaded the inspectors on the error of their ways!) :-)
