How often to change the oil
#11
Here's something to think about too. For a long time the standard for cars has been 3000 miles. The oil & car companies both said the same thing. However, many newer cars now have an oil change interval of 10000 miles. So you might wonder what miracle was performed to allow car engines to go 3 times longer. Well here's the secret, they changed the printing in the owners manual. The engines are exactly the same.
The reality is that people tend to have a 'more is better attitude'. Well if they recommend 3000, then 1500 must be better. Then a few people realized that oil isn't going to last forever. They also realized that changing oil at 3000 miles or less is extremely wasteful and unnecessary. The car companies were first, but even the oil companies are changing their tunes now. Look at Mobil 5000, it's call that because the change interval is 5000 miles. The oil is exactly the same as it's always been, they just changed the bottle.
And on the flip side, just how many miles do you think you're really going to put on your bike anyway? Most bikes are sold, stolen, crashed, chopped up for parts, etc, etc. Very few bikes see more than 40000 miles. The type of oil & oil change interval just aren't that important in the live of your bikes engine. Almost always the bike dies before the engine wears out.
Ok, who wants the soapbox next?
