Help with overheating
My fan never comes on and if i leave my bike idle after riding or at slow speeds (in the city) the bike will overheat. I'm guessing the thermostat went bad but do not know how to test it. The collant pump may have also gone bad. I am going to hook my fan directly to the batery and see if it comes on. I'm hoping it's just the thermostat. Any ideas?

RE: Help with overheating
Here is the order for troubleshooting High Engine Temperature from the Shop Manual:
1. Faulty temperature guage or thermo sensor
2. Thermostat stuck closed
3. Faulty radiator cap
4. Insufficient Coolant
5. Passage Blocked in radiator, hoses, or water jacket
6. Air in system
7. Faulty cooling fan motor
8. Faulty fan motor switch
9. Faulty water pump
I believe if you are this far you can cancel off 1, 3, 4, and 6.
5 and 9 would probably be more catastrophic...you wouldn't make it very far.
7 and 8 are possible...but probably not too likey.
Seems 2 fits your symptoms best and is most likely...of coursem nothing's for sure.

RE: Help with overheating
So far I have found out that the Thermostat Switch was faulty. I removed the wire and grounded it and the fan came on. Do you know if this switch also controls the water pump or does that run continuously with the bikes engine? I had a hard time telling if the pump was running. I tried squezzing the tube but couldn't feel flow in it.
