RE: carbs
Just pulled my carbs off and cleaned them last night. No special tools needed, just some basic tools however the racheting screwdriver wrench thingy is a lifesaver and helps from stripping screws. Basically imagine a wrench with a hole on the end that holds screwdriver bits and rachets. Best tool I ever bought!
The main thing is organization. When you pull something apart put a piece of tape on it and label it. Put parts in bags and label them. Take pics with your digital camera for reference. And if you are using any carb cleaner stuff like chem dip make sure you take all of the gaskets off bc it will damage rubber. Other than that take your time and don't rush it and keep organized.

RE: carbs
I think I saw a post in General Tech maybe a month or so back that had a nice write up on taking them apart for cleaning. Even had photos of everything. Very informative.
if you think they may just be a little gunked up, try running stuff through the tank first. When I got my bike the idle was bad and I was constantly screwing around with it. I ran Seafoam through the tank whcih helped only when it was actually mixed with the gas. When I filled with regular fuel the idle problems were there as was the vibration I had at certain RPMs. I then decided to buy some Lucas fuel system treatment. It is like $5 and comes in a little bottle at the parts store. I dumped a whole bottle into the tank and rode through the whole tank. I noticed an immediate improvement after that first tank. A few tanks later I did it again and it helped even more. Since then the bike idles smooth and at RPMs and I haven't had to add a thig in the last 10-20 tanks.
