RE: carb problem?
Check your sparkplugs. If they are dark you're buddy is right.
If someone messed with the carbs and didn't know what they were doing then start there.
Likely the bike wasn't running well. They did a half *** cleaning job ( got all the big areas but didn't properly get the small MUCH MUCH more important parts )
Carb cleaner is a half assed cleaner... it's ok but if the carbs are a mess it's better to take them apart.
Carb sync and colour tune would get you a long way there... if anyone is doing a carb clinic get on board. Otherwise start at the factory settings and work from there. If you don't have a carb sync tool you can build a 2 carb tool from bottles and tubing... just sync one bank, then the other and then sync the banks.
I've rambled.
Start from the beginning. Ensure you have a FULLY charged good battery. Poor spark won't help. Then check your plugs. They'll give you an idea of how the engine was running when it was turned off. As this is a low rpm problem they should be telling you the symptoms right now as is. Get a spare set of plugs to use for testing.
