cam chain question?
Your bike is not getting too old to that kind of speed, i have a 91 and it does a buck fifty no problems, im 170lbs. I think someone changed your gearing if that is what you're maxing at. Good luck
does any1 know how hard or easy it is to change the tensioner? My bike has been making a taping kind of noise for a few months, i'm pretty sure its the tensioner, it comes an goes, so it doesnt do it all the time
it takes about 15 minutes to change it out. unbolt the bracket that the holds the clutch cable (to give you more room to work) take out the two bolts for the tensioner, replace with new one. make sure the gasket is facing the correct way, otherwise the tensioner will fail prematurely. (the cut out side faces the tensioner, the round side faces the motor.)

I am talking about the manual Adjusters of course
and not the original hydraulic part. Don't you have to remove
the valve cover to get to the Cam Gears so you can set
the tension of the chain between the Cams? How else are you going
to know if the cam chain is too tight or not? I always wondered
about that.
i think manual ones are tightened the whole way down, then backed out a 1/4 turn. start the bike and adjust further from there if needed. not sure if you have to take the cover off or not.
I had to back my manual one way out before i could get it down in the hole. I started the motor where I knew the tensioner was loose, then gradually wound it down till all noise went away, then locked it down. Havent heard a peep since.
Do NOT tighten the manual tensioner down all the way and back it off a 1/4 turn. You will cause some serious damage to your engine if you do what somebody else posted above. You do not need to remove the valve cover as the instructions tell you to do to install the manual CCT. Just remove the old CCT, install the new manual CCT with a new gasket, and apply some orange RTV to the threads of the bolts. Tighten down the CCT until you start to feel resistance. Start the bike and continue to tighten the CCT until the chain slap noise goes away. Once the noise is gone, tighten the CCT an additional 1/4 turn, then tighten the jamb nut, making sure the adjustment bolt doesn't move when you tighten the jamb nut. After this, you're good to go. If you need a manual CCT, I have a brand new APE tensioner in the package that I'll sell for $40 shipped.
