'93 F2 Mods - Phase 2
After spending half a day re-cleaning the garage, getting my tools sorted after my last work, and re-organizing things so as to have room to work on and store both bikes, I got some things done to the new street bike.
Firstly, I just "de-gunked" it! It was quite a mess of chain lube, dust and road grime - the rims are probably three shades brighter!
Secondly, I did some carb work and got the thing running, and did some work on the throttle-side controls.
It hadn't been started since October, and I had not been able to get it to start yet - the owner stated that someone completely turned out the idle adjuster screw, and he had to screw it back in, so, chances are, I could have fiddled with that adjuster, and eventually got it to start, but, I'm glad I went ahead and yanked them, since they needed some attention.
I found the pilot screws all over the place, the throttle cables way out of adjustment, and the slide for cylinder 4 would stick open if you slid it back.
I got the carbs completely cleaned, and since it has a UNI hi-flow filter installed, as well as a slip-on, I went ahead and upped from 135 stock mains, to 138, added an additional shim to the jet needles, and set the pilot screws to 2 1/2 turns out, which is 1/4 turn further than stock setting.
The controls were a mess - the PO had the bars, for the Vortex clip-ons, barely sticking into the main body, so that they were sticking out abnormally far, and the end of the bar at the mounting point, had no end cap in it, so they were full of water. The throttle housing/switch assembly had a broken rocker switch, for the engine kill switch, so since I had another housing with intact switches, harness, and throttle cables, I installed it, lubed and routed the cables, and created a quick turn throttle out of the OEM tube, while I was at it.
After this work on the controls, I re-installed the carbs, getting the throttle and choke cables in the proper range, and hooked the fuel line up to my auxiliary fuel supply, hanging from the ceiling... she started instantly, but I had to quickly get the idle adjuster turned down, since I was a little off in my guess on the butterfly positions.
SHE LIVES!!!

I got the airbox components cleaned and re-installed, so I could reliably set the idle - the motor sounds great, with no unwanted noises coming from anywhere.

I forgot to mention, that the bike also has a brand new battery and regulator/rectifier, which looks like one off of an R1.
This is the ridiculousness of the clip-on setup that I mentioned before, with the bar mounted out too far, and no end-caps at the top, so there was water in both bars.

As you can see, this one is bent, and I've ordered a replacement bar from Vortex. I don't know why they were set like this, and if they weren't sticking out so far, its possible it would not have bent when the bike went down, but seriously, with them sticking out that much, you could bend 'em riding past a street sign!!
Since I need a replacement bar anyway, I robbed the other end-cap from the bent bar, to put on the throttle side, and adjusted the length appropriately - I also swapped out the reservoir cover for the red billet one I had.

It's getting there! As soon as the new forks arrive, things will start to move faster... unfortunately, I payed for those 4 or 5 days ago, and contacted the seller about 3 days ago, requesting tracking info, if it was available, and he still hasn't sent me any info, even though he said he would send it as soon as he arrived at his shop. I don't know if they've been en route to me, and that he's just forgotten to send the tracking info, or if he's even shipped them yet.
Yeah, the new streetbike will basically be the same as my first F2 setup, only without a few of the "go-fast" parts, but for the street, it will be just fine... the only thing I have to do, is resist the urge to upgrade the same items all over again, on the new bike!
I've still got no tracking info on the forks, but they were shipped last Friday, so I expect them today or tomorrow... I hope.
Tuesday, I ordered a replacment bar for the clutch-side clip-on, and a new set of grips - both items showed as "In Stock", and not just "Available". I decided to pay a few bucks extra for UPS 2-Day, rather than regular UPS Ground, so that I would certainly have them by Friday, but every single time I do this, Motorcycle-Superstore lets me down, by not getting the order processed expediently
- the parts just now shipped, 15 minutes ago, so there's a chance that I won't get them 'til Monday, and I won't get to use the weekend to finish things up.
This irritates me.
Anyway, when the forks do arrive, I'll finally have a chance to employ my new front stand, for the fork swap.

The forks arrived Thursday, and the replacement clip-on bar and new grips came yesterday, but I haven't got anything done yet... my family dog had to be put down yesterday afternoon, and I haven't snapped out it just yet - I've got the garage heated up, and I'm about to go out and try to get lost in the work, and some loud tunes.

The forks are in great shape, and look even better, now that I got them cleaned up.

But, I have gotten the rear-most part of the new bike's subframe straightened, mounted the new forks on the race bike, and removed a lot of the items from the race bike, that are going on the new street bike: seat, fairings, lights and signals, windscreen, etc.

Hopefully I'll get much more done tomorrow.
