Default wont start with button, but push starts

any idea why my bike will turn over with the button
but wont start unless i push start it.

tried with the choke on and off
the fuel pump doesnt cycle when cranking like it used to.
but even when i jump power to it for a second to give the carbs fuel it wont spark, so it wont start. what could be the issue?

also are the F1's supposed to be peaky?
i dont have consistent power. it doesnt have much down low, 4-6k has decent power, then drops off and then power comes on again later maybe 8-12k
and it doesnt like to idle under 2krpm
im thinking its a carb issue?
maybe they need a rebuild?

Charge the battery on 1-2 amps for 3-4 hrs and try to start it. Im guessing your battery has just enough power to crank but not enough power for the igniton.

hmmm alright i suppose that does make sense. i guess bikes are more sensitive to lower powered batteries vs cars?

ive gone on a few hour long rides and i figured that would charge it enough. does it need to be charged still? or is it just a bad battery?

Not sure, It’s obviously getting spark if you can push start, try giving it some gas when hitting the starter.

My battery has died from sitting around, but it still starts (just) and runs fine. So if it’s turning over its not the battery

in my experience, this is usually indicating a bad battery, possibly caused by a faulty charging system. a cheap/easy test, get th bike running, then put a volt meter on your battery terminals and see what the voltage output is at idle.

also, if it wont idle below 2000, clogged pilot jets are the culprit. easily remedied. if you cant see light through em, they arent clean.

that was my thought. while cranking off the battery i pulled a plug boot and stuck a plug in it (spare) and cranked while grounding the plug. i saw no spark then. but when i push start it obviously i have both fuel and spark...so it does sound charging/battery related i suppose.

ill grab my volt meter and test the idle voltage and report back tomorrow.

im not so familiar with carbs (always been a fuel injection guy, so pardon my lack of knowledge. the extent of my carb knowledge is from my nitro RC cars as a kid :P) is the pilot jet inside the carbs? aka does it require removal of the carbs to check if its dirty?
it wouldnt surprise me if its clogged. 3k idles like a champ, once it gets around 2k it will be okish at idling. and below 2k it just dies. a lack of fuel does explain it. i may have to just pull the carbs for a good cleaning. it also has an exhaust and ive heard it needs a jet kit to run properly if i have one (im not sure if the PO did a jet kit) i may just need to overhaul the carbs

thanks for all the help guys!!

the battery read 13.99 volts while idling at 2500rpm last night
so im thinking the charging system is fine. ill check out voltage while cranking here in a bit.
and look over the vac lines when i have the carbs out this weekend for cleaning

i also forgot to mention the bike has no plastics. and it seems people say if you do that, holes must be partially covered because the intake gets more air with no fairings on.
this may explain my peaky feeling

sounds like your charging system is ok and the battery is getting old/weak. When my battery was dying it would crank over but not fire until it sat on a charger for a few hours. After that it would fire right up and be ok for a day or two then not start again. It was reading good at idle on the multimeter but load testing it starting it with the high beam on would drop the voltage down low to 8-9v. I bought a yuasa battery and its been perfect in the 1400mi ive put on it in the last month and a half.

Do you have the air tubes that connect the airbox lid to the frame? People say to remove or cover them if you dont have fairings but i have no fairings with the tubes on and i dont notice any ill effects at highway speeds but ive never had one with fairings either.

hmmmm very interesting.
the only place i can get a battery here is walmart i think :/
im not sure its the best place to get a battery...opinions?
they range from 30$-70$

i do have the airbox, and i also have the tubes.
this is the first bike ive had, and the first ever that ive ridden over like 30mph.
below 30 on the other bikes ive ridden were very linear, with no flat spots and peaky power. and this one has flat spots and feels peaky.
ill be cleaning the carbs this weekend. im thinking this will help clear up some issues.

I've run walmart batteries in MANY a bike. you need an ES9BS model for the Hurricane. sealed batteries are the only possible way to go.
