any other ideas?
i also notice i HAVE to have the clutch pulled in, even in neutral.
i used to be able to sit on the bike, stand up, and in neutral and crank it.
but, it also used to start with the button.

is there a chance i messed up the starter relay again?
i was cranking on it a long time once, and when i let go of the starter button, it kept starting til i hit the relay with my hand. maybe that fried it, but still lets it turn over, just no power to the CDI while its cranking?

id pull some of the black wrapper off the wires goin to the main relay. When i got mine i had some wires where the insulation was melted from the plug being corroded and caused the starter button to cut out off and on. The button wouldnt turn the motor over at all unless you played with the relay and moved it around. we soldered in a spare relay from a friends tl1000 and its worked flawlessly ever since.

alright cool, ill look at that then. maybe check continuity between all the main relays wires its only 4 anyway

i would check all wire connections and clean the ground wire from voltage regulator to frame.
its weird you dont get spark crnking the starter, but are able to bump start it. it sounds to me like you're getting major voltage drop using the starter. clean and check the wires from the battery to starter relay to starter.

hook up a voltage meter to the battery. what do you get with bike off? what do you get when you start cranking the starter?

you can also hook up a car battery. use jumper cables and connect it to your motorcycle. now check to see if you get spark while cranking.
*IMPORTANT* if you dont remove car battery from car, MAKE SURE THE CAR IS NOT RUNNING

also remove starter and clean the area it contacts the motor. starter case is the starter ground.

you hate the rain? I rode in it yesterday, got EVERYTHING drenched, my leather glovs and jacket are still not dry after riding today in the heat for several hours.

yeah, i just moved here (idaho) to UI from over in tacoma WA. i despise the rain unless there are huge thunderstorms (im from the midwest)

ive only ridden in the rain once. it isnt my cup of tea really.
its nice that i dont HAVE to ride/drive. so if it rains i just stay close to campus.

youre a champion for getting that wet!

alrighty, nice day today! so i went out with a wiring diagram and tested continuity and power/ground for a bunch of wires

the cdi has power and ground and has continuity to the coils
the coils have power
standing batt voltage is 12 and cranking volts are 10v
coil has power and cdi has power while cranking.

cleaned out a couple connectors that had light dust/grime

checked for spark while cranking. no spark. and no fuel pump pulses

i dont understand why everything SEEMS ok but i HAVE to start it using the push start method...

could the pulse generator not be working while cranking but magically work when i push start it? it seems like it just doesnt send the pulse to the coils/fuel pump while cranking anymore (it used to idk why it wont electric start now) to tell it that the motor is starting

i think im going to take a look at the pulse generator tomorrow
its getting colder. and push starting is getting a little harder
i need to fix the button asap!

do i need to drain anything to take off the pulse generator cover?
i dont think so, but im not sure
