Hello, this is my first post.. I have a 1987 CBR 600. Just bought a few weeks ago. It is Yellow, and has 27,700 miles. My main question is that occasionally when i sit at a few stop lights the temp guage goes about 3/4 of the way up. It goes back down after i take off for a bit. I know there is a fan on the radiator, but i am not sure when it would kick in, or even if i could hear it. The bike can be noisy. I figured this is the best place to ask since you all have the same bike. Also, i noticed the front of the radiator is a tad dirty. Dusty and such. Is it ok to spray it with water now and then to clean it out, or is that a no no. I appreciate anyones help. I havent been on it a ton, I just want to make sure the temp thing is normal since it will be getting warmer out soon.

I dont have much of an answer but mine gets pretty hot too. I have a nice dent in the front fins though so flushing my radiator might solve it. I have sprayed my JEEPs radiator for years and my new truck as well so i dont think it would be a problem on our bikes? Im not a fan of yellow but your bike is very clean and it sure is beautiful! Looks like maybe a F2 tail section...

 

Thanks... It was yellow when i got it. I would prefer something else, but it looks nice in person. Thanks for your reply. If anyone else has more info i would appreciate it.

I think that they all run warm, least thats what I have heard from other 'cane owners. Mine sometimes even gets above 3/4. Just be forewarned that if you do plan to pressure wash your radiator, make sure and take it off then spray from the back to the front otherwise all you are doing is blowing dust and dirt exactly where you dont want it.

 

yeah they do tend to run hot is the general consensus. make sure your fan kicks on when it gets hot though. and try not to sit in traffic too long during the summer, or it WILL overheat. mine did and i went sidewalk riding!

One option you have is to bypass the relay and hook the fan up to a toggle which would allow you to control when to turn it on and off. These bikes do run on the hot side, like Rrasco said try not to get stuck in traffic, because they heat up quick.

 

Thanks for all the help. I havent let it get hot enough to check the fan yet. I will make sure it does kick on. We have wall to wall stop lights here. So i will just have to avoid the main roads as much as possible this summer. Iwill mainly be country riding though. I thought about the fan idea. Hooking it to a toggle, but as long as it works, i am fine. Just need to find that out. I am sure i will when it gets warmer. Was around 74 today, and it didnt get too hot riding. Since i just got it, i am learning what is normal, and not normal with it. I will just see what happens. The coolant is clean in it. I think it was flushed recently. So that is a plus.

big10donjuan- I bought the bike here in Bloomington. The guy works at the same company i do. Saw it in the company classifieds. He has had it for 3 years he said. Must be a different bike.

 

I hate the over heating. I'm use to it due to the Italian cars, but it is not fun at all. Nice looking bike and I like the after market lights on the tail.
