Presumably when you say you are getting an unstable rpm signal you mean that the tach is not responding properly to a stable tach signal from the motor. If the tach was working fine before it was disconnected, the logical answer is either you connected it back wrong or some connections have corroded over time. Place to start is clean all your connections.

You might try PM to Doc B. He is the most knowledgable about getting these to work. He hasn't been on here much lately because I think he sold his CBR.

In order to post pictures you need to link from a hosting site like PhotoBucket. I think there is a tutorial at the top of the page.

Hi guys,

Unfortunately I don't have the pertinent info in my head about cylinder number settings, etc. I will look and see if I still have the installation instructions for the real SS182 - which may or may not be of use depending on what tach you really have. Seem to recall there was a thread on a forum somewhere that had a scan of the instructions. (edit - found it -

http://www.customfighters.com/forums...ad.php?t=68498

I get a PM or see a post here every once in awhile. To cut to the chase, you will find that before you do anything else you have to determine which fake Koso/SS182 you have. If it is an actual SS182 the thread may have some value for you. If it is the stripped down fake of the SS182, I'm not familiar with it and I can't say if the same approach will help. It did not seem to help others with the fake SS182 very much.

It's been a couple years since I put the tach in my bike. 53K views of this thread in the mean time. Wow. My profession for the past 21 years has been manufacturing electronics kits (not motorcycle related), selling them, and supporting them so I get return business. Judging by the view count of this thread the guys who were selling these things are still selling them, possibly making money off my efforts, and still giving no useful tech support for their product. My own experience with their tech support was very disappointing. And that was not unexpected. I think I suggested before that anyone who does not have the experience necessary to get into the guts of the thing and figure out how to make it work should buy a Koso, as they make a great product and support it.

Actually I still have my CBR, though I have been riding and restoring other bikes lately. In fact I am contemplating a new paint job, and then flogging it at the track next year so it actually gets some use. These bikes are so undervalued that I figure I might as well get some of my time and monetary investment back as fun, since I would take a beating trying to sell it.

I did find one other reference to a model SS182. I don't know if this will help or not -

Glad to see your still around and you still have your CBR.

These bikes aren't as undervalued as we thought. I sold the blue and white 89' for $2800 a month ago.

What other bikes are you working on? I'm finally working on the Norton and a Triumph I picked up. Also another CBR.

My herd has thinned a little. I sold the 919 and a Sabre VT1100 that I picked up last fall.

@mad73 - my memory is not good on what each number group signifies. I'd suggest reading the second page of the instructions that were posted on the customfighters forum, as it walks through the various settings. I do recall that on my ss182 the wheel setting was circumference, not diameter, in mm. Rollout of your front tire is the best way to measure it. There are probably settings for no. of cylinders, number of magnets on the wheel for the speedo sensor and possibly a setting for the resistance of the fuel gauge sender. Some of the stuff you are describing like the C and E does not ring a bell.

@Denny - not surprised you got top dollar for one of your beautiful restorations. Mine's a mutt with the RR fairings and aftermarket parts. My fall/winter project is a CB77 basket case I bought a couple years ago. It sat in bins until last month when I came home from a trip to the Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials very inspired. Frame has been repaired and painted with a ceramic urethane, forks are rebuilt, and now working on swingarm and wheels. Lots left to do, but so far so good.

I've also gotten into redyeing motorcycle leathers for myself and other local riders. There are pics of the CB77 project and some of my redyes here -
