Default A bit of a strange question

This question is pretty simple but let me explain why I am asking this.

I have a 1987 CBR600 that I purchased recently. This bike was a basket case that someone else partially assembled. I got the engine running but after a short time running I can't get fuel to the carbs. I have been trouble shooting electrical and fuel pump issues but am wondering if the wiring system is functioning properly.

So here is my question. What should happen when I turn the key to on position? First, is there a system check. On other bikes I have owned the system goes through a check and the tach needle cycles, etc. Is this supposed to happen on the CBR? Then, should I hear the fuel pump cycle? The fuel cut off relay?

Is there a dash light that needs to come on prior to start? I have lights for nuetral and oil pressure so I assume this is correct.

I know this seems like a dumb question, but I do not have an owners manual. I do have the shop manual but can't find anything on start up.

Thanks for your help.

There is no system check since there aren't any ECU's controlling anything on the bike it basically just supplies power to the appropriate places when the ignition key is turned on. I don't think the fuel pump will run without a tach signal as in just turning the key on, but if you check voltage on the 2 wires at the fuel pump connection while cranking you should see battery voltage. If no power at the fuel pump there could be an issue with the fuel cut relay or it may not be getting a signal from the tach.

Thanks for the response. I found some YouTube videos of bikes starting and I am getting all the right lights and there is no system check. I also found a really good explanation of how the fuel system works. I've done all the power checks and tested the fuel pump with power. Everything seems okay with the exception of the fuel cut off relay. I haven't been able to test that yet. I think that is the problem.

Dennis, picked mine up used and had tons of fuel issues. Some notes I figured out.
1. Make sure the On/Off switch is ON.
2. Check fuel will flow freely through the filter. (there is a screen in the tank that can get clogged too)
3. The pump switch will burn out if you run it with out fuel available. (I'm talking about the internal switch that makes it pump, so to make sure the pump is pumping, take off the line to the carbs, turn on the gas, and crank it over. If the pump won't pump, get a new one.)
4. Make sure the fuel is good. Fuel can go bad in a few months of sitting.

These are just things that I struggled with on mine. ended up changing fuel pumps twice, new in-line filter, and new tank filter, and drained fuel that had been sitting in it while i was figuring out all the issues.

Good luck!
