I used to post on here a little while back. Now that I'm pulling this project out of hiatus, I figured I should start posting again. Anyways, last time we left my '87 Hurricane, she was having charging issues. I replaced the battery and R/R and had the wiring inspected for voltage leaks, still no good. So now I've bought a used stator off eBay and will be installing it as soon as I get a moment. Over the winter my roommate managed to knock her over while parking his truck. So I picked up some new mirrors and levers to fix the broken and bent. Most of the plastics that came with it were next to irreparable, so I opted to simply pull off everything that wasn't necessary, and trimmed the bits that were. She's not meant to be a pretty build - more of a utilitarian Road Warrior-esque creation - and I'm doing it on a budget of near $0, but the Supertrapp exhaust is ruthlessly loud and I can't wait to get her our on the road again. Here's how she looks at the moment:


More or less together.


New mirrors - still need to swap the levers (new ones are black.)


Trimmed down the huge front fender.


Relocating wiring - zap strap turn signals until I figure out a more ideal place to mount them.

Major to do list:

- Install stator.
- Install levers.
- Redrill/tap stripped oil drain plug.
- Paint tank (black.)
- Reupholster seat (unless anyone wants to trade their black seat for my red/white two tone!)

Minor problems:

- Elusive coolant leak.
- Return spring on starter button sticks (headlight doesn't come on until you pull it back.)

 

check your metal coolant pipes in the head for your coolant leak, mine was seeping after I replaced my head gasket. Nice mirrors :P I have the Carbon Fibre ones.

Dont suppose you want to part with your rear tire hugger?

 

No offense or anything but I like the way you first got it better, should have just found the side fairings and had a really pretty bike.

 

I've been told that you can cut out the hoses between the frame and air box. This creates a space to relocate the wiring that was out front. I was having problems with my charging system too. It ended up being my RegRec. Good luck with the build, it's looking good.

Still need to address a few charging issues and replace the fuel petcock (built a new one and retapped the tank to fit it.) Going to go over the pipes with black header wrap as well. Another day (or two) of work and she'll be on the road again. Good timing too, the weather here is hot and sunny. Any tips for polishing up those Hurricane red rims?

 

Mr Clean Magic Eraser will clean them up, or use a mild rubbing compound.

 

Cleaned up the exhaust and the rims. Installed a volt meter so I can monitor any issues with the charging system (so far so good with the new stator and r/r in!) Might install some new rear signals to cut down on the bit of drain I am getting. Also fabricated and installed the new petcock, as the old one decided to start leaking. Been riding her every day, and I'm pretty happy with how she turned out. Especially with the very small budget I had to get her running. Definitely turning more heads as a streetfighter now.



I would love to find a belly pan that would fit this bike.
