Default Oil Change

I just bought the service manual for the 05 1k and i dont know if i am readin this right or not but it looks like to me that its sayin that i only have to replace the oil and oil filter every eight thousand miles. I know thats gotta be wrong cause there is no way these bikes will last runnin on like that wit an oil change every 8k miles. How often should i change the oil? Ive heard everything from 2k up to 5k and i dont know what exactly is right.

Dizzie,

two things....

1. were you makeing fun of me in my harley post?

2. the days of having to change your oil evey 2k are gone. 6-8 with syn, or standard oil is ok. i just dont do it, thats all....and i think its pretty much like that across the board, just do what makes you feel best...

I've never replaced the washer on any of my bikes or cars (dealers always "recommend" it) and have had zero leaks or oil related problems with over 1 million combined miles. I also change my bike oil every 3K and that's with mobil1 full synthetic and I'll agree that it's pissing away money. Bike could probably go 5-6K and be fine -- but I consider it inexpensive insurance ... heck I pay a lot more for actual bike insurance that I never use. At least the bike gets some use outta the fresh oil. Am I the only one that notices how much more smoothly the bike shifts with new oil?

To me the most important things with the oil change are:

don't go over the recommended mileage
always change the filter
don't overfill
and the most important thing that peeps have f'd up for forever ........ BUY A DAMN TORQUE WRENCH AND FOLLOW THE MANUFACTURERS ADVICE ON OIL DRAIN PLUG TORQUE. If you a) strip out the oil pan or b) break the head off the bolt I will laugh at you and call you a silly sod.

Look at it again. It says oil change every 4,000 miles. I made the same mistake you did not too long ago.
