I haven't taken my bike in yet. My local dealer had a list of about 12 bikes they sold that fell within the VIN. They already had replacement tanks for ALL bikes. They said they weren't going to check the tanks, they have the tool, they just want to replace the tanks and move on. Suits me.

update on this for those interested... first, recall/warranty work does not last forever. I figured since I was the original owner I could get it covered under the recall. They asked for my vin over the phone to see if recall was still available... and it is, whew. So, taking it to a dealership nearest me that is not the dealership I bought it from, but they didn't seem to care. They said they need to order a new tank and it takes 1 week before it arrives..so, a day or two to check it out, 7 days to order tank if that's what is actually wrong, and a day to get it back together and back to me....pretty much a week and a half down time.

last update on this unless something changes....

It was the fuel tank.

Tank was replaced under warranty, took 1 week.

This is on a 5 year old bike, so, words of wisdom,..get it done while under warranty,...I'm suprised I had a problem related to the original recall this many years later. I've gone pretty easy on this bike,..it would of been a lot easier to bring in while it wasn't leaking all over the place. If you're buying a used bike, you should probably check to see if this was done. my .02

This is evidently a pretty serious problem that is occuring more frequently than we realize. I was watching a video the other day on youtube and it had some still shots. One of them was of a 1000rr with kickstand down on the side of the highway flames engulfing the fuel tank and upper fairing. It was obvious from the picture that it was a nice bike, and who ever had it was out for a ride when it happened. My wife and I were puzzled what the cause was because the bike did not look smashed at all, and the everyone had a confused look about them.
