Some tanks were manufactured with a bad weld at the bottom of the vent tube. You're supposed to bring the bike to the dealer and have them inspect it. If the weld is bad they impound your bike until they can replace the tank.

I got two letters telling me to bring my bike in. I asked my local dealer if I could just bring the tank in and have them check it. They said no way, I have to bring the whole bike in. They gave me some line of BS about pressure testing the tank to check the weld. Idiots!

I checked the weld myself, it's fine. No jackass dealers will be "inspecting" my bike!

i have an 06 and had mine checked at dealer. weld was bad. wasnt up to par with the tester they use. so i got a new tank out of it. not that big of a deal guys. all the dealership has to do is remove tank cover and check weld on vent tube. they cant mess that up to bad. better to get it done than to be out riding and catch on fire. just my opinion. i got mine done a year and half ago.

I heard a lot of tanks went back to Honda that had good welds. Some dealers were replacing tanks without even checking them. I've also heard several complaints about hoses being pinched and misrouted due to the carelessness and/or stupidity of the dealer service techs.

If you trust your dealer, take it in. If you don't, buy the special tool for $15 and check the weld yourself. Honda has a nice step by step procedure on how to do this.
