Default having trouble with fork disassembly

I'm bolting up a 2005 CBR1000RR front end to my 1988 Honda Hawk GT NT650. I have the 2004 RR manual, but am having some real trouble getting the lock nut off the top of the fork. The preload just spins when I get the lock nut toward the top. I'm hesitant to try it with the other fork, in case I've damaged something on this one already. Is this something I need special tools for, and would be better off bringing down to the local bike shop? (I'm in Huntington, CT. The closest place for me is RER in Monroe, or Libby's in New Haven)

Help, guys! I'm not used to cartridge forks!!!

Theres a special tool that you use to hold it at the bottom so it wont spin as you try to unlock it it should tell you honda specail tool number
xxxx-xx-xxxx something like that.

Thanks. I'd love to avoid paying a dealership to do it!
