Default Add me to the list of electrical failure

Was riding today (04 1k) and noticed it cranked slower than usual when I left work. Figured I had time to get it home and check it out, but nope, on the freeway my dash went out completely but the bike was still running. Figured I should get off the slab, so took the next exit near my buddy's work. Bike was running rougher by the minute, then just stopped about a block from his work. Walked itthe rest of the wayand parked it. It was completely dead. Went and got a battery and that got it home fine. I'm hoping that just the battery went bad, but not too optimistic about that. Found the troubleshooting guide for the electrical system online and will go through that tomorrow or the next day. I'm clinging to this little bit of hope that the battery is the only culprit since it is the original battery. More than likely, I'll be checking eBay for a stator or R/R in the next couple days. Sound familiar to anyone? How would the bike die with just a bad battery? I thought it was odd how it seemed like it was gradually getting worse. First the slow crank, then the dash lights going out, then running rough, then finally quitting. I'll know for sure once I have some time to check it. Sucks cause tonite was supposed to be bike nite too. Had to pass on that obviously.

It's possible a bad battery could cause this, but it's very unlikely. The symptoms sound like a classic case of the stator / regulator failure that's common on '04 and '051000RRs. Before you spend a dime on replacement parts, be sure to check with your local dear on the warranty extension (see attached).

I didn't realize they bumped it for that long of a time. I printed that out and will definitely be asking about it once I figure out what is wrong with it. I think that warranty work is profitable, and I know some people over there, so I wonder if they would just swap both the R/R and the stator and save me some work.

Aquick voltage check at the battery terminals should tell you if the charging system is up to par. If it isn't, remove any electical mods from your bike andyour dealershouldtakecare of the rest.
