Default Massive F3 Electrical Failure on the interstate

I was riding my Honda CBR600 F3 from Daytona Beach Florida to Tampa today, going about 80 mph.
All of a sudden, the entire electical system quit. I made it off of the freeway onto the shoulder.

The battery had expanded and was making this high pitched whining noise, and was smoking.

Two extremely nice women picked me up and drove me around all day trying to fix my bike. I bought a new battery and brought it back to the bike. As soon as I touched the battery wires to the battery, the regulator/rectifier started smoking and smelling really bad. I had just bought a new R/R about a month ago, because the old one was bad.

The dash lights up with the new battery, butthe headlight doesn't come on, and the starter doesn't turn at all.

I'm hoping the problem is just a bad R/R so I can get a new one under warranty, and that it's not a really serious electrical problem because I am a college student and extremely low on funds.

Any ideas?

Probably a dead short in the reg/rec. Use the diagnostic above to find out where to look.
