Default 954 Vs 1000RR

Is it just me or is the old 954 a more aggressive bike to ride, than the current 1000RR?
I just finished taking my brothers CBR 954 for a spin and there was immediate noticeable difference between it and the new 1000RR I test rode just a few months ago. Granted the 1000 was still being ridden in and the 954 has a few thousand km on it, but they were both stock bikes.
The 1000 made you feel like you were actually going slower than you really were, but the 954 feels like it wants to rip your neck off the minute you snap it into 2nd gear.
Isn't the new blade supposed to be lighter and more hp than the old 954? Or has Honda just decided to go for the more understated performance that we have come to expect from the italians?

Break in the 1000rr properly and you would be surprised at how well it performs. Granted I have modified my bike but I have ridden a 954 and I still think the 1000rr is a better bike.
