I pulled the tank when I did the carbs the first time, I removed and cleaned the filter under the petcock as well. The inside of the tank didn't have any rust I could see. But I'll pull the carbs again at the end of the season and if there is more mud I'll have to seal it over the winter. Ohh I pulled the pins from the slides (I was not using enough force: apparently mine are super tight) and they already had 1 shim on them. Is that normal? And what are the signs of to much shimming? I know I read it somewhere but I'll be dammed if I can remember!

 

Yeah - you can have light powdery rust up top where you can't see which just
keeps mixing in as it oxidizes repeatedly- & as the upper tank is usually always
exposed - if the bike sat for a long time in past history and oxidization got going
- sealing is the only thing that will stop it period

yeah they have a shim already - add one more or leave at one your choice - 3 ='s to much

too much shimming it will bog down high up at speed

Cleaned my front pistons today Continueing rest tomorrow

 

Finally fixed the upper cowl on the 87 and buffed up the new MRA screen for it.
Also used Laquer Thinner to take the yellow oxidization off the oem mirror covers
and rubber boots - and then polished them to seal, also this is with the oem seat
I recovered myself. The MRA screen for the 87 was worth the wait (10 weeks)
from Germany

Both sides of that upper cowling ( the upper ears past the mirrors) are now
reinforced with steel strips epoxied on rear of them and concealed by the inner
covers - should last better without re-cracking imo.

Here's a pic...it's a great bike - rides quite different than the other two - becoming
my favourite in some ways - especially around town - get the wow - that's a
"Hurricane" comments from people at Cumby's in town.

It did strike me as a bit odd when I put the mirrors back on yesterday that they are a different colour to the fairing, but seeing your it is obviously standard. Seems strange to me.

I do like the screen.

Yeah they don't quite match - same with my silver 1990 when I had stockers on there too

Actually I need to respray the entire bike at some point as the upper cowl and
pipe covers have new paint on them and do not have 25 years of sun bleaching
to make them match 100% - they are darker toned - same color - just darker tone

So !'ll have to shoot the whole bike over at some point - but for now - I just want
to ride it all day long

Looks great Sprock! That is the color mine started out as but it's been painted so many times I doubt I could get it back down to there!

My back gave out before I got the carbs back on today but I learned a trick when putting the top covers on to make sure the rubber boots stay in the groove (I use Vaseline also) I pushed the slide all the way up so the membrane is inverted and the weight of the slide holds the membrane in the grooves perfectly as I tighten down the screws. speaking of which I lost one and had a hell of a time finding a replacement! Went to the hardware store and tried for stainless but the only one they had in that thread were zinc coated steel.
