Default Odometer stopped??

So my odometer on my 96 1000F failed to turn over when approaching 7000 miles. It just stays at 6999 and the tenths dial keeps turning as usual.

The trip odo works fine. Any ideas? worn gear? how much to fix that bad boy and can I do it myself easily?

Dan

Riding it will not make it worse. Don't know how to fix it with out taking it apart.
You are most likely right. A plastic gear I would suspect.

I had this problem with the F150 a couple of weeks ago. It turned out to be massive corrosion on the negative battery terminal lead. 1 can of coke later (a waste, I'll admit) and I was good to go.
