Hi All,
New user to the forum. I've been lurking for a few weeks and have found a lot of awesome info!
I just bought a 1990 CBR1000 for $300 with 42K miles. In pretty good shape overall with the exception of the seat cover. Hasn't been run in a couple of years but the previous owner had it for about 10 years and took pretty good care of it though he did have to leave it outdoors under a cover for 1 year. My plan is to get her cleaned up, fuel drained (surprisingly it didn't smell to bad I think because he left the tank full), plugs and fluids changed and see if I can get her fired up. I was thinking I may need to pull the carbs but I'm going to see if I can get her running first to make sure there are no other issues. Here's a pic.
Thanks guys!! I'll keep you posted on my progress. Hope is to get it fully sorted over the winter and be ready for spring. This is part of a father and son endeavor where he decided he wanted to learn to ride and being that I used to ride was happy to be supportive and join by purchasing my own bike. He bought a CBR600F3 and will be going through rider training in the spring. I had a CBR600 back in the day and always liked the CBR1000 and when this one popped up, I jumped on it.
Got her up and running this weekend!! I checked the carb bowls which were empty (I think the PO may have run them dry before putting it away), put in a new battery, plugs, oil and filter, emptied and cleaned the fuel tank, put in some fresh fuel, and she fired up and ran on the first press of the starter!! Needless to say I was very happy. I did dislodge a couple of mouse nests from the exhaust but otherwise all was good. She came up to temp, idled smoothly although a little high (1200rpm) and as expected there is a slight bit of CCT noise but it actually went away after it ran for a little. For now, I'm going to leave it alone until I get other things sorted out on it.
