Default Newbe, need advice on buying a 1990 Like NEW

Hello all,

I am new to this forum and I was hoping to get some advice/help. I have an oppertunity to buy a 1990 CBR1000F that has only 6000k miles on it. I spent 2 hours looking this bike over, and I could't find one scratch! It literally looks new. The guy bought it new and ordered it from the local dealer way back then. It is his pride and joy that he must sell now to make house payments.

What do you all think it may be worth? KBB has the retail of $2590 and NADA has it up to $2860. The guy is stuck on $2900. I offered him $2600, but he won't budge.

There are onlythree issues with the bike, #1, the tires are original, the still have tread, but they are 18 years old. #2 one of the right side carbs seems to be gumed up, so I figure I would have to go through all of the carbs. #3 the battery is bad, no biggie.

The guy hasn't registered it since 2004 but he has it nonoped so registration should be cheep. He last rode it 1 year ago to get it serviced, all fluids flushed and new plugs, (he has the recipt, I seen it)).

I kid you not, this bike is clean. Spotless with no scratches, dents or nicks.

Sorry for the long post, Please let me know what you think.

Thanks,
Mark

Welcome to the Forum !
I cant comment without pictures, but as to price......for a bike with 6000 miles on the clock, I'd buy it immediately if it was here.......4 years ago I paid the equivalent of $5000 for this one...1990.....10,031 miles. Ask him to meet you halfway on the tyres and maybe the battery, if not just pay him and be happy. My 2c worth.

I have been watching that bike on ebay. On sunday it closed with a bid of $2100 but the reserve was not met. I emailed him when he relisted it and he said his reserve is $2800. Richmond is close enough to me to buy it, butI like the Red White and Blue one better, lower miles.

The 1993 is a more modern bike, with Dual Combined braking, and a number of improvements over the 1990 model. Mileage on these bikes isn't a problem, they will run happily beyond 100,000 miles if maintained correctly.
Here are pics of the 1990 and 1993 models for reference. (Just to confuse you) he he

Thank you everyone for the advice. It is definately a clean bike, I was just concerned about the asking price of $2900 being $300 more than the high retail KBB. But I guess that KBB would account for more millage than the bike has. I guess in the scheme of things, $300 is not that much.

Thanks,
Mark

Keep in mind that the KBB retail value is their estimate of what a dealer would charge for a used bike. Most dealers will give you some kind of warranty, although usually only for 30 to 60 days or so. Sales from private parties should bring significantly less than KBB retail values, though more than KBB trade in values. For what it's worth, I bought my '95 off of ebay for $2000 in '03 with 12,000 miles on the clock. I won't say my bike was issue free at the time nor as clean as the bike you describe, but mechanically it was and still is sound. I'd sweat the guy or keep looking. If he needs the money to make house payments, then he ought to put a realistic price on it. When the bike doesn't sell because it's priced too high, he'll come to the realization that he'll have to lower the price if he wants or needs cash.

Blue Book also assumes "normal wear and tear". That would include a LOT more miles, some scratches even if only minor, some finish deterioration, etc. There is no number for a truly spotless original bike. I wouldn't hesitate to go $3000 and could even justify as much as $4000 for something that clean and IF it's what you want. Go look at $3,000 and $4000 bikes regardless of year and see what you get for that.

Sounds like you found a new bike for that money, just older. And not so old that it's not well equipped with reasonably new technology... meaning radial tires, cartridge forks, etc. That's the first years for that stuff. I wouldn't want any older for the suspension and tire fitments but that's the perfect year, the first of the newest generation of that stuff and a major advancement as comes along now and again.

And it is exactly the years that I like as my favorite all around street and sport touring bike. After looking long and hard, I just bought another '90 to replace my high mileage one (122,000) that I crashed.I travelled to Burlington Vermont from Pittsburgh to get it, that's how much I like them. Andespecially '90 and '91, pre-link brakes but cartridge front fork and wider wheels to accept the latest radial tires. Best all around street bike for my taste.

If you don't decide to buy it,PM the details, please. I might just take it.
