A geriatric moment or two
First off, my son said "I'll do the timing" so - he was adamant he knew what to do.............
so, like a geriatric I DIDN'T CHECK IT.
Second I thought I'd got the TDC markings wrong - I didn't but he turned the bike the wrong way. I DIDN'T CHECK THAT EITHER.
All in all, a cylon pileon of note. "Don't let a Harley mechanic NEAR your bike !!!!!!"
Future note _
If you want it done right do it yourself..................
It's still my fault, and I feel stupid OK.............
And yes, I've done the timing on inline fours many times................CB750, XJ900, etc etc.

Me too Steve but the manual says do it anticlockwise...................
Timing was perfect, stripped and reassembled. Camchain and new tensioner, sweet as a nut. Problem was carb related.........not sure why but what the hell it's running now.
Old tensioner had jammed -
Now I have
Death rattle from the primary chain at idle, so I'm just going to ride it until it breaks !!!!!
I'm SICK..................

Engine must come out for a primary, as far as I know.

Glad to hear it's running pete.... dam shame that the primary is makin' noise, though..

On the counter clockwise thing, I always thought you were supposed to do it that way to take the slack out of the system in the direction that the engine would be moving when running.
I think this can actually make a difference of a tooth or so on cars with belt driven cams.
However, I also think it depends on how your motor is built, too. Counterclockwise would be clockwise on a "backwards" motor. (ie... some motors that honda didn't build.. )
If you turn a honda motor clockwise, you can actually jump teeth on the belt and screw up the timing.

On-line currency calculator says it's just over $2000.

Is this for a spare engine Sprock? Seems like a lot of money to me , but I don't know if that's a good price in Africa?

I was actually looking at a few bike prices at an online SA bike retailer.
They're definitely more expensive.
New KLR650 is the equivalent of $8,200 where it's like $5,550MSRP over here.
2000 CBR 600F was like $4,800 over there.

Interesting.
