Knocking sound when shutting off throttle in gear
I have to say that the balancer shaft is very unlikely to make a clunk or knock. Being gear driven off the crankshaft the tolerance is too fine for that unless you'd been running her on a mixture of white spirit and sand instead of 10/40.
There are many things that could be causing this symptom. You're going to have to work through one at a time.

Ah, ya bugger, you edited before I could take you down for that rather misguided (never to be seen again) statement, except my email is proof.

I've never had to adjust mine either.

Hi again and thanks again for more tips.
I think we may have the answer - nothing too exotic or expensive I hope but this is what I did....
Heaved it up onto the centre stand and checked the links one by one as TimBucTwo suggested. There appeared to be one or two links that weren't as free as they should. I started her up and put her into 1st. The back wheel was spinning and the chain was lashing around like an old nicker (or should that be Knicker) elastic, snatching occasionally and rattling.
I've learned something today - don't trust a dry chain! The guy I bought it from this week had fitted a Scottoiler but not connected the vacumm tube!
It looked ok when I checked but after oiling it, it has started to loosen up and its quieter and smoother running. Still not right but I adjusted it and ran her up the road and noticed a good improvement. I'm now in the market for a chain.
Should the sprockets be replaced with each chain?
Thanks again to all who have contributed.

Yes
Chains ans sprockets wear in together and mixing a new chain with worn sprockets isn't a good idea.
Well you could have just corrected me pal
Henry had done that already - no need for me to hammer it home.........
All I did was ask a simple question anyway............yu bugger.
And leave my grass hut alone - it's better than your dunny - my hut has a seat for the ladies
Skype not running - some problem with it, but you'll get your chance......

I would put money on a drive train issue ...
A real easy test is to whack her up on the center stand and spin the wheel by hand , watching the chain to see how tight or slack it gets in different positions mate ...
Check for excessive slack in any one spot ? or a tight spot where no slack seems to be at all ...

As for Henry being ahead - I say again, all I did was ask the question.
Henry banged you on the noggin for being a wally, not me
Subtlety is sooooooo much more fun.
I'll remember size 10 1/2. Noted.
Oh and I'll tattoo it with a magic marker, I hate needles...............
Always knew you buggers were savages - no seat in the dunny - ? SCANDALOUS.
You can always send me a PM if you're in the mood.
But then I may ignore it for a couple of days......hehe
Busy testing the new helmet.
