Default knocking sound

i have an 05 and when i get at 5000 rpm's i start hearing a knocking sound. its not too loud but it kind of reminds me of when i was a kid and would put a baseball card in the spokes of my bikes. could someone please help me figure out what this is so i can get it fixed asap. thanks.

Are you sure it's knock? I've got the sound of a hundred BBs in my crank case at 5000-7000rpm. A new manual cam chain tensioner should fix this right up.

My friend just installed the manual CCT yesterday on his 02' F4i and he said it's like owning a brand new bike.

He ordered the part online and did the install in his garage with tools from the hardware store around the corner. The hardest part was reaching the damn bolts!

There was a thread with photos that he printed out that walked him through the install. I'm pretty sure it was from this forum somewhere!

Here is the link my friend printed out and used to guide him through the install:

As I said, the hardest part was to access the damn bolts! You need some good angled sockets to get in there.

Good luck!

Just prop the gas tank up, loosen and slide the coolant reservoir back and you should have enough room to just do it with allen wrenches. I have a couple of sets that are various lengths that worked fine. Still a little bit of a pain, but can be done in about an hour or faster. Just make sure you get the lock nut tight! PM and I can give you a contact to get one shipped for under $50.

FYI if you replace the CCT you're replacing the wrong part. You need to replace the CCTL (Cam Chain Tensioner Lifter)
